Every year we receive quite a few gift cards to places we *might* shop at or end up waiting so long that they get lost or go unused.   This year we decided to help you out – since we can use most of those giftcards we are going accept gift cards* for studio time.   This is on a first come first serve basis – so hit us up and let us know what stores and the amount of the gift cards.. HARVESTING THE FAM FESTIVAL

Downtown Windsor - October 1st – 4th, 2009

Harvesting The FAM is Windsor Ontario’s largest independent inter-arts festival designed for the promotion and development of independent Film, Artistic and Musical talents working in any medium or genre. The festival creates a positive, open-minded space for a diverse array of artists to exhibit, promote, perform & sell their works.

You can catch live hip hop from Windsor/Detroit all the way to Copenhagen, as well as indie rock, minimal techno, electro, folk, spoken word, DJs, hot new producer showcases and more!  Some of our featured artists include Nick Speed, Magestik Legend, Drummer B, The Golden Eagles, live hip hop bands The Definition and of Mice & Musicians.  We’re also offering free film and art exhibitions, from Windsor/Detroit filmmakers and visual artists, a live outdoor projection installation from Broken City Lab and a fashion show put on by the FAM Fashion Team.  Many of the films selected for this year will focus on urban Detroit, including experimental film to hip hop beat-videos, documentaries and full feature films.

Admission to the festivals’s 12 independent downtown venues is FREE.

So we’ve been insanely busy & so has Detroit Hip Hop – Over the past few weeks we’ve seen some of hip hop’s finest through our doors including:

Freshtight Designs Presents Emerge & See – A Fusion of Live Art & Music

The Emerge & See event will take place Friday, September 11th at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, MI. 
The night will focus on the merging of live art and music, and will showcase some of the

 best creative talent to emerge from  Metro Detroit.

Highlights include live painting, graffiti, a puppet show, bands and DJs, tables set up with artists selling their work, 

and a special showcase section with unique paintings and designs.

Charles Hamilton 9/17/09 Update… He’s been dropped from his label, Interscope

“Chucky,” a track dedicated to rapper Charles H is the latest from the talented artist – Marv Won and renown producer – Mr. Porter.   Marv delivered his “open letter,” that features additional commentary from Houseshoes, to Charles via Twitter and there’s no word yet if he’s responded.

So what’s the story behind the music?

About a week ago, a few people noticed that Charles Hamilton credited the legendary late producer Jay Dilla as executive producer on his upcoming release, complete with stories on Jay’s role in creating the album like this one:

I also wanna thank James Yancey for his guidance in putting this album together. Sound wise, I couldn’t be happier. Again, the album was mastered reel-to-reel/digital-to-digital, and I couldn’t have done the entire process without him being a total jerk about me getting that EXTRA vinyl-ish sound. Thanks Dilla.
Nah seriously. He helped master the album.

This definitely seemed odd as it has been 3 years since he has passed and those closest to him had never heard of Charles Hamilton.  After attempting to reach out to him, and getting questionable responses they turned to the internet to spread the story behind the credit – and ultimately their efforts paid off.

Hamilton since removed Dilla’s name from the credits on his upcoming release from Interscope.

Almost immediately after posting, a friend sent me another story that involves Charles.

Blackspade, Producer & MC from St. Louis – also claims that Hamilton ripped off one of his tracks from myspace, laid some vocals over it, released it on a mixtape and refused to give any credit to it’s rightful creator.
